Random and Fixed Effect Models in Panel Regression When performing a panel regression analysis, the problem of choosing an appropriate model specification arises. A pooled OLS regression assumes that the differences in data between cross-sections and time periods are insignificant so that they can be ignored and treated using a simple OLS regression. However, in real life, distinctions between cross-sections and between time periods can be substantial. In these cases, individual effects have to be introduced in the model. To account for these changes fixed effect (FE) and random effect (RE) models are used. The difference between FE and RE specifications is based on how exactly they treated the un-observable differences between cross-sections or periods. FE and RE models An FE model resolves the issue of heterogeneity in observed objects by introducing individual dummy variables. This greatly increases the number of parameters to be estimated in the model and consumes degrees of freedom. As a result, the estimation of FE models may not be the most efficient compared to alternatives. However, benefit of the FE model is that the coefficients it produces are always unbiased and consistent. This cannot be said about the RE model, which suggests a different way to treat the issue of heterogeneity. Instead of adding many dummy variables, RE models add a single stochastic term which accounts for cross-sectional or period variations. This method does not consume as many degrees of freedom but it creates an additional error term associated with the new added term. This error term may be correlated with the regression residuals. In this case, one of the assumptions of the Gauss-Markov theorem would be violated and the coefficients will not be BLUE (Best Linear Unbiased Estimates). In particular, they may no longer remain consistent even though such specification would be more efficient compared to FE models. Final Note When conducting a panel regression analysis in Stata or other econometric software, it is necessary to run both the FE and RE specifications to decide which of them generates more appropriate results. After the outcomes of both models have been obtained, the Hausman specification test will help to determine which output to choose for interpretation. The null hypothesis of this test is that the coefficients of the RE model are consistent. If the test does not reject the null hypothesis, the RE model is accepted as more efficient. After that, the manager will need to manage employees resistance by applying corporate governance and finally reinforce the change process to make it sustainable. Leader and managers have to work aligning with corporate governance to implement successful change process within the organisation. In order to make the organisational changes sustainable, the board of directors and managers have to make interventions in the change management process properly. Mller et al. (2014, p.1309) stated that to understand intervene process Kurt Lewins Model can be applied. In the stage of unfreezing, the leaders and managers have taken the responsibility to inform the employees regarding the changes. At first, the manager has to announce that a new group decision maker will be appointed to making effective and advanced decisions. The decision-making group will be mainly the representative of the views of team members. As argued by Filatotchev and Nakajima (2014, p.290) the leaders will have to perform the role of making the team members understand why the change is being implemented. The skilled decision maker will have more market knowledge and will be able to make a quick decision. However, this is not making the staff neglected by giving opportunity to perform their job properly. In th e unfreeze stage the responsibility of the managers and the leaders to advise the team members to get ready for experiencing changes. According to the model, the next stage changes require the assistance of corporate governance. Too and Weaver (2014, p.1383) counter argued that to execute the change the board of directors have to develop new rules and policies, which the staff members have to follow. Corporate governance helps to ensure that the implementation of change management is being done through a proper process. Cheng et al. (2014, p.178) stated that the corporate governance can lead develops a systematic approach to change management within the organisational culture. On the other hand, change intervene requires employee motivation. The company can motivate the employees by performance recognition through a reward system. The final stage of Kurt Lewins model is refrozen in which the board members of the organisation make the implemented change permanent. For making sure that the change is permanent, a continuous monitoring process has to be implemented. The HR department of the company will have to monitor and needs to eliminate the hindrances in the way change management to acquire business objectives successfully. The importance of systematic approach in organisational activities has identified here. To receive proper change management the employees need to get aware of change by managers and leaders. This has ensured the importance of communication between leaders or manager with team members. It has found that if the leader fails to become a role model for the team members to make them understand the importance of change then the organisation will not be able to acquire continuous success. Even the management also need to receive an individual change to understand required competencies to manage change. On the other hand, corporate governance needs align with change management for systemic delivery change management. Thus, it can be stated that corporate governance, management and leadership has a thorough influence on the sustainable change of an organisation, which helps the company achieve organisational objectives and competitive advantage.
